India to produce 100 million metric tons of rice next crop year
NEW DELHI (Commodity Online) : World’s second largest rice producer India expect another bumper output this crop year and set a target of 100 million metric tons for next crop year.
According to country’s agriculture ministry, this year India’s country's rice production is estimated at 94.01 million tons as against 89.09 million tonnes last year.
India’s next crop year starts from July. Rice is primarily a summer crop, though some quantities are also grown in winter.
india raised its purchase price of unhusked-rice by Rs 1500 per ton for 2010-11 to Rs 10,000 for common grades and Rs 10,300 for superior grades.
India will likely receive normal monsoon rains in 2011. The monsoon season runs from June to September and is vital for India's farm economy as more than 60% of its arable land is rain-fed.
Rice is mainly grown in the eastern state of West Bengal, the northern states of Punjab and Haryana as well as the southern state of Andhra Pradesh.
india has procured 25.1 million tonnes of rice since October last year, nearly 1% less than the year-ago period.
Food Corporation of India (FCI), the nodal agency for procurement and distribution of foodgrains, purchased 25.26 million tonnes of rice in the corresponding period of the 2009-10 marketing year (October-September).
