Kerala: Rice at Rs 2/kg for all PDS families
In an unprecedented election bonanza, the CPM-led government in Kerala on Wednesday decided to give rice at Rs 2 per kg to all families under the public distribution system (PDS). Addressing the media after a Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan said the Cabinet had ratified the project, which would benefit all ration card-holders in Kerala. The state has about 70 lakh ration card-holders. Until now, only BPL families numbering 35 lakh have been given rice at Rs 2 per kg. The budget for 2011-12 had widened this social security scheme for 5 lakh more families.
